Jeep 4.0 & 2.5 engine bolt ons

Jeeps are wonderful, go anywhere vehicles. In 4 cyl or 6 cyl form, they're plenty peppy around town. And while the 4 cyl might leave you downshifting to pass on the highways, neither engine has been ignored by the aftermarket. Plenty of gear exists to boost power and torque by spinning a wrench.

Let's start at the top and finish at the bottom.

Please remember, this is not meant to be a comprehensive list. It's meant to be an overview of the different areas. Your time, budget and goals will determine how far you follow any of these ideas. Something from every topic will take you from a 4.0 beater, to a 5.0 eater.

Intake

You want more power, let the engine inhale. Step one is an intake.

4.0

An intake like this will allow you to replace the restrictive factory intake box. Usually good for 5 HP or so more than stock.

This type of kit is better at isolating the intake from the warm, underhood air. This promotes an increase of usually arounf 10 HP or so over stock. You will also hear less intake noise from a system like this.

Exhaust

Want another 10 HP - 15 HP or so, let that puppy exhale.

4.0

The 4 cyl and 6 cyl engines have the same basic exhaust needs. Though the part #s will vary, there is the header, the cat and muffler to consider. Most kits supply cat-back systems, and you may need to source a downpipe as well. Banks Engineering has been at this since diamonds were coal, so they know their stuff. On the 4.0 engines, you need thick flanges to avoid cracking & exhaust leaking.

Cooling

Yeah, time to put on a mod with no glamour. Without it,though, you have no-go.

BeCool Aluminum Radiator   Flexalite Electric Fan

Cooling your engine is vital. Trail-use and/or towing put heavy demands on the engine and it responds by making more heat. heat t warp heads, crack exhaust manifolds, fry transmissions. Heat is your engine's enemy - this type of combo will keep it cool as a cucumber: aftermarket, aluminum rad, and a larger, electric cooling fan. In some cases, you can cool an engine too much, so do your research and talk to the suppliers about your real-world situation. Oh yeah, an electric fan can free up another 5 HP - 8 HP or so for ya.

Forced Induction

You want power? You want it NOW? You want a blower!

Avenger Supercharger on a 2.5 4 cyl   Avenger Supercharger on the 4.0 motor
Yes, you can turbo-charge these motors - and the kits exist. But, if you're offroading, you want torque; down-low torque. Turbos don't give you that. Superchargers do. Few produce better kits than Avenger. Kits for every need, provided your budget can handle it - roughly $4000 USD gets you one of these...in a box. Install is extra, though luckily, it is actually a straight-forward bolt-on mod. Get ready for an extra 100HP or so in your 4.0 - hope your rig is built for this.

Snorkels

For those serious about water, here's how not to breathe it

Safari Snorkel on a TJ   Safari Snorkel on a Land Rover
There's only one supplier in the US. ARB - from Australia. Snorkels will ensure you can ford deeper water without you motor sucking it in from behind the headlight. Water in engine = rebuild. Now, a down-side is you'll be replacing air filters,d epending on conditions, sometimes once a month. This will actually rob the motor of a couple of HP, but at least when you suddenly find yourself dropping nose-first in that stream you thought was shallow, you'll rest easy that your motor is safe. Snorkels do require cutting holes in body-work, so they're not for the faint of heart or the "Leasing" crowd.
This is an interesting idea. We're not saying it works, but many others have used it with positive results - judge for yourself. SpiralMax ® Turbo Air Twister and Turbo Exhaust Tube - vortex induction - creates a better fuel/air mixture
