Jeep
SRT-8
|
|
|
| The
Jeep SRT-8 is Jeep's flag-ship Grand Cherokee model. Following
in the footsteps the Viper laid down with the SRT model, DC
has tweaked the Grand Cherokee into a sport-car killer with
muscle-car credentials. Not a hard path to follow, really, it
just takes some engineering guts to step up and make such a
model. |

Let's
see if the Jeep SRT-8 specs can tell us a bit about this wolf-in
wolf's clothing, shall we?

But,
why...? |
|
|
When
Jeep decided they wanted a halo/image machine, they
started with the range-topping Grand Cherokee and simply
applied an age-old formula - lower it, slip on big wheels
and tires, give it enough power to melt said tires,
then tweak the styling a smidge.
Build
it and they will come. In this case, they will line
up. And it's worth it with specs like those. The SRT-8
is destined to become a collector's item, no question.
|
 |
| Those
numbers are possible because Jeep dropped a 6.1 litre
V8 under the hood of the SRT-8. Developing 420 bhp and
420 lb-ft of torque, this Hemi engine is mated to a 5
speed auto tranny (with AutoStick). Power is put to the
road through a full-time AWD t-case (with no low-range)
capable of splitting the power evenly from front to rear
through an electronically controlled clutch pack in the
center differential. The front and rear axles have open
differentials. |
